How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on Joe Joslin Outdoors starts with one question: will this product work in your outdoor space? For patio furniture and gear, that means the space you have, the weather it faces and how you plan to use it.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with the space and the use

A large dining set can crowd a small patio. A lightweight umbrella may not suit a breezy, exposed yard.

We check dimensions, seating capacity, clearance, storage needs and setup requirements. For heaters, fire pits, lighting and shade, we consider placement, fuel or power needs and the conditions each product is designed for.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at the details makers list: frame and surface materials, cushion fabric, weight limits, dimensions, weather protection, care instructions and what comes in the box.

Makers describe their products in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read what buyers report after using a product. We look for patterns, like rust or fading, loose hardware, cushions that hold water, difficult assembly or covers that do not fit.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A durable dining set may suit one guide, while a compact bistro set may fit another.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers sell similar furniture and accessories under close model names, so we check each model and what comes in the box, and we only link new units.

We skip unknown brands with no track record and any product with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not hands-on tests. We don't claim to have used every product we cover.

Outdoor products need to be used and cared for as their makers direct. Follow the maker's instructions for installation, weather protection and safe use, especially for fire pits and heaters.
